According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of men taking advantage of cosmetic surgery has grown significantly – up nearly 121% since 1997. While this still accounts for less than 10% of the total surgeries performed, the numbers continue to grow. In 2011 almost 800,000 men received some kind of procedure, and the most common choices for surgery are (not surprisingly) different from the procedures chosen by women.

ASAPS reported that the top five cosmetic surgeries for men in 2011 included:

Liposuction – 41,663 procedures

Rhinoplasty – 24,533 procedures

Eyelid surgery – 22,905 procedures

Male breast reduction – 17,645 procedures

Facelift – 10,400 procedures

Corroborating Statistics

Another industry group, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), also released statistics on the number of men receiving cosmetic procedures. While the order was a little different (they put nose reshaping at the top), they listed the same five procedures as those most often chosen by men.

The study from ASPS also shows that the number of people receiving a nose reshaping was down by 2% between 2010 and 2011, and eyelid surgeries also decreased by 9%. At the same time, though, breast reduction was up 8% and facelifts saw a 3% increase.

Some of the procedures that didn’t make the list, but deserve mention for their level of growth, include chin augmentation and cheek implants. The number of men looking to improve the cut of their jaw was up 76% from 2010, while cheek implants grew by 52%. It’s hard to say whether these procedures will break into the top five in the near future, but it is a trend that is worth watching

Cosmetic surgery continues to grow in mainstream acceptance, and the total number of procedures performed every year (for men or women) continues to grow. In California we continue to contribute to these statistics, and while the ASPS didn’t look at the specific state statistics, it is included in the region that accounts for over 31% of the total procedures in the country.

Are You Considering These Procedures?

We specialize in a range of cosmetic procedures for men and women, so whether you are looking to do some body shaping through liposuction or taking care of some other areas like the eyes or the nose, we can help. These procedures may not be for everyone, though, and we can work with you to discover the right procedures for your situation. As more men start to take advantage of these surgeries, we will continue to keep up with the trends to make sure everyone gets the results they want.

Q. I understand that the FDA recently approved a new silicone gel-filled breast implant by a company called Sientra. What is a gel-filled implant and how is it used?

A. On March 9, 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a silicone gel-filled breast implant manufactured by Sientra, Inc. (based in Santa Barbara, CA) to increase breast size (augmentation) in women at least 22 years old and to rebuild breast tissue (reconstruction) in women of any age. As a condition of approval, Sientra is required to conduct post-approval studies that will assess long-term safety and effectiveness outcomes as well as the risks of rare disease outcomes. The FDA based its Sientra approval on three years of clinical data from 1,788 participants.

Silicone gel-filled breast implants are medical devices implanted under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle for breast augmentation or reconstruction. These implants have a silicone outer shell that is filled with silicone gel. They come in different sizes and have either smooth or textured shells.

Breast reconstruction includes primary reconstruction to replace breast tissue that has been removed due to cancer or trauma or that has failed to develop properly due to a severe breast abnormality. Breast reconstruction also includes revision surgery to correct or improve the result of a primary breast reconstruction surgery.

Breast augmentation includes primary breast augmentation to increase the breast size, as well as revision surgery to correct or improve the result of a primary breast augmentation surgery. With this recent new approval, there are now three FDA-approved silicone gel-filled breast implants in the U.S. manufactured by Allergan, Mentor and most recently, Sientra.

In our practice, we begin with a private, complimentary consultation that serves to determine desired results for breast augmentation. There are multiple options when it comes to breast implants and we encourage all patients who are seeking this procedure to discuss all alternatives thoroughly with their physician. We see an increase in inquiries this time of year as women prepare for the upcoming summer swimsuit season. Spring is an opportune time for this procedure as patients are usually able to return to work within a week of breast augmentation, and can resume all other normal activities after two to four weeks. Scars will begin to fade after a few months. Our patients find that shopping for clothes and participating in summer activities are far more pleasurable, and usually report an increased sense of self-confidence.

Whether you filled out your bracket for March Madness or not, the month of March is all about winning. And we’re not talking about Charlie Sheen either. A win in your life could be as small as saving money or walking a mile further than you were able to the week before. Here are five ways to keep your spirits high through the entire Month:

1- Set Goals
Goals are an important part of life. Without them we have no clarity or end vision. With them have desires that motivate us. As life moves forward goals are specific deadlines to ensure we are on the path to living the fullest life possible.

2- Be Positive
Being positive isn’t just about being a motivating friend/wife/husband or family member. Being positive starts with how you speak to yourself. Make the endless stream of subconscious thoughts that run through you head everyday more positive and your outlooks will become more optimistic. Changing the way you think is possible, but it’s also a conscious effort.

3- Try something new
Get out of your daily routine. Trying something new doesn’t have to be as drastic as sky- diving; it can be as simple as taking a different way to work or wearing a new style of clothing. Trying new things makes life interesting and more fun.

4- Don’t Settle
Set your goals high and don’t settle less than what you deserve whether it be a job, a spouse, friendships or things you don’t like. Set your goals high and go after what you really want.

5- Treat yourself
Treat yourself for doing a good job at work or at home. Rewarding yourself is a way to keep yourself motivated to reach your bigger goals.

In honor of March Madness, we’re offering some killer deals to keep you winning all month long:

The facial IPL laser package will renew your skin by getting rid of sun damage spots, improve your skin tone and treat tiny red veins. A package of 3 treatments costs $450 (regularly priced $600).

Dr. Hollan is the first female plastic surgeon in San Diego, California, certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Hollan’s special gift of seeing the final result of her skills long before surgery is what makes her one of the best cosmetic surgeons in San Diego. At a young Age, Carrol Hollan M.D. had a clear passion for anatomy. At age 6, Hollan was already drawing realistic photos of people, making them look their best.

Medical School was an aspiration of Hollan’s since a tender age and achieved that goal when she graduated from Florida Presbyterian College and the University Of Florida College Of Medicine in 1973. In 1977, Dr. Hollan moved to California to complete an internship in general surgery and did her final residency in plastic surgery at UCSD’s School of Medicine in 1983.

“Beauty is all about being whole and complete,” Hollan says, “our comfort level with our bodies affects the degree to which we can be fully self- expressed and engaged in the full pursuit of life, supporting our growth and development or keeping us separate from all that we can be.”

Dr. Hollan’s passion for physical transformation doesn’t stop when she leaves the office. Dr. Hollan serves as a mentor in training for medical students. She also is a surgeon for Interface, an international field program devoted to surgical treatment of congenital and traumatic childhood deformities.

Dr. Hollan goes out of her way to make a special connection with her patients. Dr. Hollan and her all- female staff provide pre-operative information, available resources, precautions to take to ensure the best possible results, expectations during recovery and a written estimate of the costs involved. Dr. Hollan and her staff do extensive follow- ups with patients to ensure expectations have been met. Dr. Hollan’s staff has been handpicked to ensure they share her mission of caring for patients with warmth and openness.

An abdominoplasty, more commonly called a tummy tuck, is a procedure that can help you get rid of stubborn pockets of fat and excess skin that remain even after reaching your weight goal. During this procedure, our surgeons remove extra fat and skin from the midsection and tighten the abdominal muscles to result in a smoother, tighter appearance.

Before

These before and after photos are of a patient in her 50s who underwent an abdominoplasty procedure. She was an ideal candidate for tummy tuck surgery because her weight was stable, but she still had some excess skin and adipose around her abdomen. She came to our San Diego plastic surgery clinic in order to achieve a flatter, firmer appearance in her midsection.

Our cosmetic surgery team developed a plan to help this patient get the results that she wanted. We recommended that she undergo a full abdominoplasty to get rid of the extra skin and combined that with some liposuction on the flank/waist area to help contour her appearance.

A tummy tuck is usually performed as an out-patient surgery in as little as 3-4 hours. For most patients, only a single, hipbone-to-hipbone incision is needed that is placed as low as possible so that it is concealed well by the underwear or bikini line.

(Before)

After

The after photos show the incredible results that this patient received after her surgery. Compared to the before shots, you can see that her middle appears smoother and tighter. You can also see that there is no visible scar, as it is well hidden at her waist.

Ideal candidates for this procedure are post-pregnancy moms whose skin has lost elasticity from being stretched out and patients who have experienced a large amount of weight loss. No matter how much exercise is done, the skin will not go back to its original state. Many patients are able to achieve a good outcome like this with an abdominoplasty, and the results are permanent as long as patients are able to keep their weight steady. For this reason, we recommend that women who are thinking about undergoing a tummy tuck wait until they have had their last child before the procedure is performed.

After surgery, most patients are able to return to normal activities within 2 to 4 weeks. Drains are used with this procedure and are left in for about a week in order to help minimize swelling and help with the healing process.

If you think a tummy tuck might be right for you, come to our clinic in La Jolla to consult with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. We can help you explore your options and recommend a personalized plan that is right for you.

Ms. Maierle-Foss is President and CEO of “The Pink Icing on the Cake”, a permanent make-up enterprise that provides expertise in the area of permanent applications for eyebrows, eyeliner, lips and restoring pigment color to breasts after breast reconstruction surgery. She has completed advances courses in the tattooing of the areola and nipple area for Breast Cancer Survivors and has become a referral source for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the American Cancer Society.

According to Ms. Maierle-Foss, “After working with plastic surgeons for many years whose practices included a large percentage of breast reconstruction surgical procedures, I realized how important it is to complete their rehabilitation through enhancing their positive image on the esthetic aspect of restoring cosmetic features to the breast area. Through these permanent cosmetic measures, women who have undergone breast reconstructive surgery emerge with a regained positive self-image. I was particularly drawn to working with the Smoot, Sadrian and Hollan medical team in part by the renowned breastwork of Dr. John Smoot; he is highly regarded within the plastic surgery industry and also serves as Chief of Plastic Surgery for Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla. It is an honor to be invited to join his staff.”

Surgery for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes can do a lot to help with a person’s self image. There are procedures for almost any situation, and whether you are rebuilding something that was damaged through injury or disease, or choosing a procedure that is strictly elective, there are many choices and options for beautifying and reconstructing the body.

Cosmetic Procedures

Studies continue to show that more and more people in the United States approve of plastic surgery in general, and between 2009 and 2010 there was almost a 9% increase in the total number of procedures performed. However, even with the growing acceptance of cosmetic surgery, there are still many people that don’t understand what it encompasses and what it can do for the patient.

Cosmetic procedures and strictly elective, and they can include breast augmentation, liposuction, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, facelifts and other contouring procedures. A lot of the recent growth in the industry though, is due to the prevalence of new, non-surgical procedures (such as Botox injections). Patients are now able to get some great results without having to go under the knife. The procedure is finished quickly, and recovery time is reduced.

Patients who are considering these types of procedures can benefit greatly from the results. Many of us perceive certain flaws about our bodies, and while this isn’t a cure-all, plastic surgery does offer one way to make a lasting change that can improve self-image and self-esteem.

Reconstructive Surgery

The people we deal with who are looking for plastic surgery in San Diego, California are either trying to correct some of their perceived flaws, or restore the form and function of something that was damaged through injury or illness. These types of injuries can do more than just physical damage, and it can be very hard to accept what has happened. These types of procedures, though, aren’t necessarily about building a self image, but restoring what was lost.

These surgeries are used for repairing things that have permanently affected the body. This could include birth defects along with the results of traumatic injuries. There are a lot of options available for different problems, from breast reconstruction or reduction to surgeries to correct maladies on the hands and feet. Facial surgeries can correct breathing problems or defects like a cleft lip, and, of course, injury repair can help individuals who have been severely burned or cut.

Advancing the Industry

As we continue working in this area we are continuing to see new developments that change the way we think about both cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries. Whether it is the new, non-invasive surgeries or new tools that help us restore someone to their previous appearance, we can see the industry advancing quickly, and there are always new opportunities to provide the services people want and need.

Smoot is a plastic surgeon in San Diego and is the chief of plastic surgery at the Scripps Memorial Hospital. Smoot has more than 24 years of surgical experience and has been practicing plastic surgery for about 20 of those years.

Smoot prides himself in being honest about giving the right advice to his patients not matter what the circumstances are. Because each patient is different, Smoot takes time to know his patients before making recommendations about procedures. He also does extensive follow- ups with patients to make sure expectations have been met.

“I love the art of plastic surgery and making people feel better about themselves,” Smoot said. “I feel that education is the key to having happy and satisfied patients.”

Smoot is a diplomat for the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which was created to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards of education, examination and certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists.

He is also an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the California Society of Plastic Surgeons. These societies are committed to advancing plastic surgery and enhancing patient care, two things that Smoot is passionate about.

When Smoot is not working with patients you can find him appreciating the great outdoors or hanging out with his family. As a Salt Lake City native and graduate from the University of Utah, School of Medicine, Smoot has gained a great respect for the outdoors and is an avid archer, fly-fisher and hunter.

Dr. Reza Sadrian has over 20 years of surgical experience and the distinct honor of being one of the only plastic surgeons in the country to hold dual certifications in plastic and reconstructive surgery as well as oral and maxillofacial surgery. It is this extensive experience that gives him such a unique perspective when dealing with complex facial cosmetic surgery issues and that makes him such a valuable part of our team of La Jolla plastic surgeons.

Dr. Sadrian says that his training has given him a unique understanding of cosmetic surgery. “My strong medical training and my love of art contribute to every procedure I do. My additional training and experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery, reconstructive plastic surgery, as well as treating trauma patients has truly enhanced my cosmetic surgery skills.”

Dr. Sadrian is a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, as well as the California Society of Plastic Surgeons and San Diego International Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is also a staff surgeon at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

According to Dr. Sadrian, one of the most rewarding aspects of his practice is having the opportunity to improve people’s lives: “Every day, I change lives and make people feel better about themselves. I help them bring out the internal beauty they have. What other profession can be this rewarding?”

Since each patient is so unique, Dr. Sadrian treats each procedure individually. One of the things that make Dr. Sadrian stand out is the time that he takes to listen to each of his patients. Before making any recommendations about procedures, Dr. Sadrian is careful to listen to the goals of each of his patients. He also engages in extensive follow-up visits to make sure that each patient is adjusting and to listen to any concerns that he or she may have.

When he is not working with patients, Dr. Sadrian enjoys being spending his down time near the water. He says, “I love anything you can do in or near the water.”
